Guide to Improving Business Performance

Water and Chemical Use in the Textile Industry

The textile dyeing and finishing sector uses large volumes of water and substantial quantities of complex chemicals. Companies operating in this sector are facing significant challenges, many associated with the acquisition and disposal of these essential raw materials. In particular, the charges incurred for mains water supply and effluent disposal are increasing, and companies need to address these issues to save money and remain competitive.

This guide shows that it is possible for companies to reduce their water and effluent costs, often by as much as 20% or more, by implementing no cost and low-cost changes. Furthermore, overall savings can be doubled or trebled when the associated saving in raw materials is taken into account.

The guide sets out to to show how all textile companies can address these business improvement issues and save money, without the need for large-scale investment. The guide:

  • introduces the concept of material balances in the various processes by helping companies to understand how and where water and chemicals are used in their processes;
  • identifies 'good housekeeping' opportunities for reducing water and chemical use;
  • outlines a water, chemical and effluent management action programme;
  • considers alternative technical options for reducing water, chemical and effluent disposal costs;
  • highlights specific case studies that demonstrate the savings achieved by UK and overseas textile companies.

NEW - Innovative Biological Treatment for Septic Tanks

Accepta have recently launched an innovative range of biological products developed for a number of specialist applications. One such product, Accepta 7101 is a highly effective biological and enzyme treatment for the bacteriological reactivation and maintenance of septic tanks and cesspools.

Accepta 7101 utilises naturally occurring, non-genetically engineered bacteria and enzymes, offering a complete solution to all the common problems associated with tanks and cesspools by biologically reactivating and maintaining the system.

Benefits of Accepta 7101

  • It comes in small, easy to use bags and is very easy and simple to apply.
  • It is made from a well-balanced combination of enzymes and bacteria, and is used for the degradation of faecal material, cellulose, paper, and all proteinic and organic waste.
  • It reactivates and maintains the microbial flora, which may have been destroyed by the discharge of chemical household products, acids, bactericides, cleaners and detergents etc.
  • It effectively suppresses obnoxious smells and foul smelling odors.
  • It contains naturally occurring, non-genetically engineered bacteria, which have been subjected to stringent antibiotic screening.

How to Build Personal Trust

A report issued by the Forum Corp. and reported in Across the Board shows that humility helps build trust with colleagues.

By admitting doubt or error and acknowledging mistakes, managers were felt to be competent. Co-workers thought, "I can trust you. You won't try to bluff me."

Other findings: Colleagues rated highly trustworthy were also rated highly competent. Also: To build trust, you must be seen as a collaborator, not as a competitor.

New Treatment Developed for Contaminated Groundwater

White Karbon was recently launched at the UK's International Clean Up exhibition. It is an alternative material to the conventional Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) and is designed to treat a wide range of contaminants from groundwater, including petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbons, metals, cyanides and pesticides.

An interesting feature of White Karbon is that, unlike GAC, it is extremely efficient at removing metals, including nickel, cadmium, arsenic and hexavalent chrome. The latter substance has proved hard to remove from groundwater using other treatment methods available.

White Karbon has its roots in the petrochemical industry, where the removal of hydrocarbons from 'produced water' is an important part of the offshore drilling process. Realising that improved filtration efficiency and small environmental footprint are two features that could be a major advantage in land based groundwater and wastewater treatment, White Karbon has been added to the growing list of in situ and ex situ remediation technologies. It is anticipated that many od the UK's Local Authorities, consultants and industrial sites that are faced with particularly difficult metal removal problems will benefit significantly from the new material.

GAC works on the principle of physical absorption, where contaminants...........

Business Skills: Use Your Brain To Cut Stress!

Relieve stress by understanding which brain hemisphere is stressed.

If you feel depressed or emotionally overwrought, your stress is in the right hemisphere - the creative, emotional, holistic side.

What to do: Switch to your matter-of-fact left hemisphere by doing writing factual prose, organising or some other process task. The emotional right side of the brain should calm down.

If you feel time-stressed and overburdened, the left hemisphere is involved. Switch to your right brain by singing, playing sport or some other creative activity.
