Legionnaires' Disease: This short and simple guide prepared by the UK's Health & Safety Executive is written to help employers understand the health risks associated with Legionella. It explains in general terms how to control those risks.

The guide is intended for employers who manage premises with hot/cold water services and/or wet cooling systems including cooling towers and evaporative condensers.

The guide covers several useful areas including:

  • What is Legionnaires' disease?
  • Where is Legionella found?
  • What are my duties under the law?
  • Assessing the risk.
  • Which systems present the greatest risk?
  • Preventing or controlling the risk.
  • Can I reduce my water temperatures if I am using another method of controlling Legionella?
  • What water treatment methods can I use?
  • Should I take samples to test for Legionella?
  • Managing the risk.
  • What records do I need to keep?
  • Does anybody else have to do anything about Legionella?
  • Do I have any other duties?
  • What happens when there is an outbreak?

Microbes Discovered that can Eat Previously

Unaffected Toxic Waste

Toxic Waste: Bacteria have been found that eat toxic waste and could be used to clean up contaminated water under many industrial sites. Although other microbes have been found that can eat toxic waste, this is the first one that feeds on vinyl chloride.

Vinyl chloride is one of the most common and hazardous industrial chemicals, used in the rubber, plastics and paper industries, as well as in building and construction. It is soluble so it can enter the water supply and linger in the ground for hundreds of years, clinging to the soil in aquifers........

Business Skills: Quick Ideas on

How to Run a Good Meeting

  • Don't compete with group members. Give their ideas precedence over your own.
  • Listen to everyone. Paraphrase but don't judge.
  • Don't put anyone on the defensive. Assume that everyone's ideas have value.
  • Control the dominant people without alienating them.
  • Your interest and alertness are contagious.
  • Keep all participants informed about where they are and what's expected of them.
  • Keep notes on flip charts or a board that everyone can see.
  • Check with the person who owns the problem to find out if an idea is worth pursuing or if a proposed solution is satisfactory.
  • Give others a turn at running the meeting. Those who learn to learn how to participate.

Handle with Care! Millions Exposed to

Dangerous Substances

Dangerous Substances: One fifth of employees within the European Union, approximately 32 million people, are exposed to cancer-causing agents at work, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has revealed. Around 22% of workers inhale fumes and vapours for at least a quarter of their working time and 16% come into contact with dyes, pesticides and chromium VI (via wet cement).

The figures have been released by the Agency to launch its campaign to raise awareness of dangerous substances, the subject of this year's European Week for Safety and Health at Work. Professions most at risk from hazardous chemicals, according to the Agency, are mechanics, printers, tanners, hairdressers, builders, farmers, cleaners, health-care workers.........

Business Skills: Be Part of the Solution not Part of the Problem!

When you come across a problem, try to think of at least two possible solutions before taking the problem to your boss. It shows that you are a thinker and problem-solver not part of the problem.
