B2B, the Chemicals Industry & e-Commerce

Chemicals Industry & e-Commerce - In a series of articles we examine how Business to Business (B2B) can be applied to the chemicals industry as an e-chemicals tool, helping to deliver longer term benefits. We start with a short article produced by Netmarkets Europe which gives a fast guide to Business to Business e-commerce.

Inside B2B - B2B in 30 seconds

Business to business e-commerce (B2B for short) is about using the Internet and web technology to buy, sell, innovate and collaborate cheaper, faster, better.

The specific benefits are:

    • Dramatically reduced costs
    • Increased transparency (of value added as well as price)
    • Access to new markets/channels
    • Many new, efficient and flexible transaction methods

It's still at the early adopter stage, but it's going to be big. This is because the large multinational corporations have now got serious about it, software vendors are more focused on down-to-earth solutions, and standards for interoperability are being rapidly developed. E-procurement and 'private e-marketplaces' are going to lead the way, so if you're a supplier you should think about how to integrate with them.

Speciality Chemicals

In the end, successful B2B is about optimising business processes and managing change, before it’s about technology. Get educated, plan a strategy and pilot some projects now. Whatever you do, do something. The worst thing to do is to put your head in the sand.

"We're at the beginning of one of the most important revolutions in business…the Internet will forever change the way business is done…Distribution channels will change. Buying practices will change…The slow become fast, the old become young. It's the Viagra of big business".
